Summer Break Out is well underway with more than 300 meals provided for to children, young people and families attending a session in week one.

Every youngster took part in a fun activity and then received a free, healthy meal.

Summer Break Out is a B&NES-wide initiative, created by 24 partners, to help children and young people recover from the ill-effects of the lengthy Covid-19 lockdown.

Summer Break Out sessions are delivered for three different age groups, with programmes for young children (under 14) and their families, teenagers (aged 14 to 17) and older teenagers and young adults (aged 18 and over).

Caryl Thomas, Programme Development Manager at Bath Rugby Foundation said: “We had a busy and exciting first week at Summer Break Out. While Monday was a bit wet, we had plenty of sunshine for the rest of the week - and plenty of smiles.

“The feedback from parents has been great. We are seeing children arrive at sessions having been isolated at home for months, desperate for fun and friendship.”

Eat Active sessions for the youngest group (and their families) saw more than 60 families attend, with 270 meals eaten at three sites – Castle Primary School in Keynsham, Welton Rovers FC in Midsomer Norton and St Michael’s School in Twerton.

Camps for teens kicked off with 12 people attending sessions at Welton Rovers FC and Prior Park College in Bath.

Advantage sessions for older teens and young adults saw 28 people sign up and attend sessions. Advantage is not only seeking to provide activity and a meal, it is also helping the attendees gain employability and life skills. In fact, after just a couple of sessions one participant has applied for an apprenticeship and has had a telephone interview. Another has applied for a job with another Bath charity and a third participant has signed up for adult learning courses post-Advantage.

Prior Park College, Bath Recreation, Bath College, Youth Connect South West, St Michaels Junior Church School, St Nicholas Primary School, Castle Primary School, Welton Rovers FC, Midsomer Norton Council, Thrings, Irwin Mitchell, Bath Area Play Project, Bath City Football Foundation, Bath Rugby, B&NES Public Health, Feeding Britain, St John's Foundation, Live Learn Cook, Curo, Future Bright, Fareshare, 3SG, Edwards and Ward and Feeding Britain, along with a number of private individuals, have all signed up to deliver and support Summer Break Out.

Support ranges from a vital financial contribution to offers of expertise and spaces to host sessions.
