Bath Rugby Foundation and Bath College have teamed up to launch a Summer course which uses the power of sport to improve job prospects for young people.

In partnership with Bath College and the Department of Work and Pensions, Bath Rugby’s charity first delivered the Advantage course for four weeks in August 2019 and the course will return again this year.

This summer, Advantage will be a part of Summer Break Out, a B&NES-wide initiative to provide direct assistance to children, teenagers and young adults.

The intensive course will run for four weeks from August 3rd to the 27th, four days a week, Tuesday to Friday, 10:30- 2:30 for one group and 12:30pm – 4:30pm for the second group.

The course will be held at the Bath Rec Sports Hub in the centre of Bath.

The Advantage course combines sports and classroom activities to boost participants skills and confidence.

Over the four weeks Advantage students attend sessions in GLL Better’s sports centre in North Parade, using the gym, bowling alleys, trampoline park and sports hall where our coaches will help participants overcome barriers to improve individuals health and wellbeing. Students take part in professional sports coaching sessions, explore the city and surrounding area on bicycles and form sports teams in order to promote social opportunities.

While sporting activity plays a huge role, the focus of the Advantage course is on improving the individuals' self-confidence and communication skills, while building a CV. Learners plan and deliver a voluntary fundraising event for Bath Rugby Foundation, learn about mental health issues, complete first aid training, receive leadership training and mentoring and receive support from partner organisations such as Future Bright and Curo working well.

The group also visit Bath College’s Somer Valley and city centre campuses to learn more about available courses, meet staff and explore their options at a quieter time of the year – overcoming barriers for those who may feel anxious and uncertain.

They also explore Farleigh House and the Recreation Ground, taking work tips from Bath Rugby's different professional departments.

The Advantage course concludes with a speed interview event at Bath College - with students talking directly with influential employers from across the city, who will offer valuable feedback and advise on potential job opportunities.
