Bath Rugby participants Stan Groves and Todd Burge named as finalists in national HITZ Awards

Two Bath Rugby Foundation participants have been shortlisted for national awards.

Todd Burge and Stan Groves will attend the HITZ Awards later this month following recognition for their extraordinary achievements over the past 12 months.

Both are participants in the HITZ programme, delivered at the Rec by Bath Rugby Foundation.

Todd (above, right), 19, has been named as a finalist in the Rugby Ambassador category, while Stan (above, left), 19, is shortlisted in the Academic Achiever category.

HITZ is Premiership Rugby’s award-winning education and employability programme which, with the help of its funders Land Rover, Wooden Spoon and Comic Relief, works with more than 2,000 14-18 year olds across England every year.

Using rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, HITZ works to get young people not in education, training or employment (NEET) back into education, training, apprenticeships and/or employment, and is delivered nationally by England’s 13 professional rugby clubs. As the club’s charity, Bath Rugby Foundation delivers HITZ for Bath Rugby.

Bath Rugby Foundation HITZ Officer, Joe Aygul said: “We are all very proud of Stan and Todd.

“They have both shown amazing dedication and a desire to succeed since joining HITZ last year.
“Both of these young men have had to overcome difficult obstacles during their lives and we’re all so happy to see them rewarded and to see their hard work recognised.”

The time and commitment shown by all 13 inspiring finalists from across the country will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 23, after they were shortlisted for the four prizes on offer at this year’s HITZ Awards, taking place at the BT Centre.

Leicester Tigers and England Rugby World Cup star Ellis Genge, speaking at last year’s awards, said: “I think it’s good that all of these people have been recognised for what they do.

“I’m sure that these guys will remember this for a long time – it’s nice to be recognised for how well you’re doing. It spurs you on to achieve more, I’ve met some great characters around tonight. 

“Personally I didn’t like school, I left school in year nine and I’m sure some of these kids have had similar things and the HITZ programme has helped them get back on track.

“Rugby in that sense, when you get put into that team environment you appreciate what everyone else is going through, everyone’s got struggles and different times they’re going through and this programme has done a lot for them, it’s great to see.”

The 2019 HITZ Awards shortlist is:

Rugby Ambassador Award, supported by Land Rover – Todd Burge (Bath Rugby), Billy Duffy (Exeter Chiefs) and Keanan Tate (London Irish)

Academic Achiever Award, supported by SCL – Stan Groves (Bath Rugby), Cameron Whitehead (Exeter Chiefs) and Tyrell Wilson (Northampton Saints)

Champion Award, supported by Comic Relief – Natalie Sexton (Harlequins), Luigi Laorenza (London Irish) and Douglas Ferguson and Melvyn Hayward (Northampton Saints)

Young Achiever Award, supported by Wooden Spoon – Josh Screech (Exeter Chiefs), Stephen Brandford (Gloucester Rugby) and Dani Tuson (Wasps)

In addition to rewarding four outstanding individuals, the 2019 HITZ Awards will also see former and current rugby players in attendance, as well as past participants of the HITZ programme as Premiership Rugby reflects on a successful decade of achievements.

The HITZ programme plays a central role in Premiership Rugby’s ‘Plan To Improve A Million Lives’ and Wayne Morris, Premiership Rugby Community and CSR Director, said: “Starting out in 2008 in a field in the London Borough of Hackney, as a rugby intervention programme, HITZ has gone from strength-to-strength.

“Over the past 11 years HITZ has engaged more than 15,000 young people between the ages of 11-19 years. The programme has engaged with young people through a range of means including rugby sessions in local communities and parks, at schools and youth clubs, and at the clubs through the HITZ Learning Academy.

“In 2013, the HITZ Learning Academy (HLA) was created to help alleviate the increased number of young people not in education, training or employment. Since then, more than 2,000 young people have joined the Learning Academy with an impressive 81% progressing onto education, training or employment.

“This year’s HITZ Awards will be a celebration of that, while I believe everyone will be inspired and moved by all of those on our 2019 shortlist as we celebrate everything that HITZ has achieved so far as this programme enters its second decade.”

This year’s glittering HITZ Awards will take place at the BT Centre on Wednesday, October 23, where participants, mentors and rugby stars past and present will gather to celebrate the programme’s achievements.
